Aderrig, Adamstown
Project Overview
Aderrig Phase 2 Adamstown
The development is the second phase of the Aderrig neighbourhood under the Adamstown SDZ and has delivered 227 new houses and duplex units ranging from 2 to 4 storeys. The site is bounded to the north, south and west by new roads and to the east with a road and linear park. The site is bounded by perimeter blocks of generally 3 storey houses and duplexes with 4 storey marker duplex buildings at key corners adjoining a linear park on the eastern boundary. The heart of the development is a central pedestrianised and landscaped green space overlooked by terraces of duplexes and houses. Place making and the creation of a pedestrian friendly new neighbourhood based on sustainable principles were key drivers in the evolution of the design.
In keeping with best sustainability practices the site levels were increased above existing contour levels to incorporate local spoil material which would otherwise have had to be taken off site. The development included permeable paving parking areas and bio retention street tree pits as part of the overall SUDs strategy.
Aderrig Phase 3 Adamstown
Following on from the successful completion of the Aderrig phase 2 tile, BKD Architects were appointed to design and deliver Aderrig Phase 3. This most recent phase is located across the Celbridge Link Road from Phase 2 and continues many of the themes established in the earlier phase, including the use of gateway buildings to mark junctions and local markers to aid orientation and way finding. This phase mixes two and three storey buildings and terraces with a four-storey landmark building and local park at the heart of the development where the Celbridge Link Road and Adamstown Way cross each other.
A more muted palette of brick and render tones are used to create a new character area which is complimentary to the aesthetic and environment established by the earlier phase. The combination of the strong built forms, the use of height, massing and the considered application of contrasting materials are all critical to place making and the establishment of a strong sense of place.
