Eyre Square Shopping Centre, Galway – ‘Ramps’ Area

BKD Architects are delighted to announce the grant of a planning application for redevelopment of the existing ‘Ramps’ entrance to Eyre Sq Shopping Centre. The proposal will replace 912m² of poor quality retail space and the ramped pedestrian access routes which provide linkages from both mall levels in the centre directly to located on the South Western side of Kennedy Park, Eyre Square. The development adjoins No.19 Eyre Square, a former bank building and listed structure, and is located within the Eyre Square Architectural Conservation Area.

The proposal will create 5 No. new retail units ranging in size from 13m² to 190m² and a café / restaurant at first floor level overlooking Eyre Square.

The elevation is split into two solid stone volumes where the main volume matches the plot width of the adjoining buildings and the parapet line of No.19 and the lower volume steps in both plan and section to respect the setting of the adjoining protected structure. A grey coloured limestone is proposed for both elements with a sanded finish to provide a light uniform surface on the main volume and a flamed finish to provide a darker contrasting

appearance to the secondary volume.
